Nonmetallic sheathed wire is made up of two or more insulated wires and a uninsulated wire, called a ground wire, along with a protective sheath that encompasses the wires for protection from the elements. This type wire, often called NM, NM-B, or Romex, is widely used as the wiring of choice in home construction. Since 2001, the standard for marking these cable sheaths has been to color code the sheath as a quick reference to which gauge wire is within it. The question to you is, Do you know wire sheath color codes?
