Can it be so? Is it possible that you can actually have a lighter weight conduit that is stronger than a heavy, thicker rigid conduit? Well, that is the claim for intermediate metal conduit (IMC). IMC was developed in the 70's. It is a ferrous metal threaded conduit with a coupling on one end. This conduit is a rigid conduit, but with a few differences of its close competition, galvanized rigid conduit (GRC). Although these two conduits may look similar in a side-by-side photo, they are quite different when you look a little deeper. There are many things to compare like applications, tensil strength, inside and outside pipe diameter, and overall weight.
Speaking of the weight difference, just think how much cheaper shippng a lighter weight shipment of IMC would be versus a shipment of conventional GRC. IMC weighs about one-third less than RMC. Now that you have heard about IMC, do you want to learn more about IMC?
