Question: Kitchen Outlet Question

Dear Tim,

I have wired new kitchen above the counter outlets in series...starting the string with a gfci.....I intend to wire a receptacle in the upper corner above the cabinets for lighting from a double gang box w/receptacle and separate dimmer switch.........the receptacle works but the dimmer shows no power or the upper receptacle........I used a 'jumper' from the receptacle to the dimmer in the double gang........do I need to break off that 'brass tab'....could it be that simple????? I'm using 12-3 and composite boxes.

Thanks,

Tim

Answer:

Tim,

Look over my article How To Wire and Install an Outlet and you'll see how I pigtailed the wires before connecting them to the outlets. Next, see how I run the hot wire into the "line" side of the GFCI outlet to feed it and the "load" side feeds the remaining outlets in my article about How To Install GFCI's.

Hope that helps,

Tim
