How Do Geothermal Systems Work?

Lower Your Heating And Cooling Costs

By , About.com Guide

Geothermal heating and cooling systems use a free, inexhaustible supply of the earth's energy to heat and cool your home. Unlike conventional systems that may use natural or propane gas to heat and freon to cool, geothermal units use the earth's temperture to provide heat or to cool the fluid pumped through buried lines.

A geothermal heating and cooling system is comprised oft two distinct parts: a heat exchange unit that is installed in the interior of the home and an earth loop that is placed either in a body of water located by the home or directly buried in the ground near the home. The earth loop is made up of high-density polythylene which is very durable and able to stand up to the elements it will encounter. This flexible hosing is installed either vertically, horizontally, or in a coiled fashion to absorb or disperse heat through the fluid it circulates.

Geothermal heating is achieved when the system takes heat from the ground or water source and transfers it into the home throght the heat exchanger. The unit controls must be set to heat to achieve this. Likewise, when the siwtch is in the cooling mode, the system takes heat from the inside of the house and transfers it to the outside through the lines. As the fluid passes through the lines and the cooler ground, it returns to the heat exchanger to cool your home. The system uses a mixture of water and antifreeze, much like your car's radiator, to heat and cool your home.

There are some unique benefits and advantages to using this type of system. Let's take a look at these in detail:

  • If you have the system loops professionally installed, they are guaranteed for more than 50 years of trouble-free use. I don't know about you, but that alone is peace of mind.
  • These units are very reliable and many have been in use for 30 years. All across the country millions of people already are enjoying the benefits of these system.
  • These systems are safe to run because there are no open flames and therefore no danger of fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • For a healthy home, no more will you suffer from dry, irritated nose or throat. The unit provides a constant controlled humity and temperature year-round.
  • Simple operation allows you to switch from heating to cooling with a flip of a switch.

In this going green era, replacing exiting outdated heating and cooling units with modern equipment that will not only save money, but also protect our environment, is a win-win situation for us all.

With an increase in units being sold in the "going Green" era, installers and technitions are needed. The movement to cleaner running, more environmentally friendly units will continue to drive the market towards this type of heating and cooling. Once in place, a significant savings will be felt on utility charges. Although there is a startup cost for the system and installation, the benefits of cheaper and more efficient heating and cooling will pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time. And don't forget, because they ae a "Green" item, the government may still have programs that help you buy the units with low interest loans and may still have tax incentives available toward the purchase of jsut such an item. These units are good for you, good for the ecomony through job creation, and good for the enviroment, especially the air we breath. Do your part and join the "Going Green" revelation today.
