It’s hard to believe I can still remember gas priced at 75 cents a gallon. That’s been some time ago, so we won’t discuss how old I am, and no, dinosaurs were not around then! But over the past year, we’ve seen gas prices skyrocket out of control. Any shift in the markets, threats of wars, or even the sun rising, seemed to control the price of gas. What are we the consumer supposed to do about it. We need the gas to power our cars and we consumers don’t have oil wells and refineries in our back yards to make our own fuel, so now what? What can we do to beat the gas grip the oil companies have on us?
One way may be to buy an electric car. These cars charge up right at your home while you eat, sleep, or watch a movie. Some can travel up to 40 miles on a charge and that’s likely to be enough to get you to and from work in most cases. Imagine never having to fill up at the pump again! Let’s see… I used to fill the two tanks on my high-top van, which holds 42 gallons, for around $50.00. When gas was $4.00 a gallon, it took over $168.00 to fill the old girl up, OUCH! Let’s see, with an electric car, gas would cost you $0.00! OK, I know there are gas motors aboard to use if the batteries go dead, but after all, the whole reason for buying this car is to eliminate the need to fill up. So if you plan your route and are lucky enough to plug your car in once you get there, there will be no need to visit the gas station at all. You can even install you own solar panels on your electric car to charge the batteries while it is not in use!
Let’s talk about the Green aspect of the vehicle. Since you won’t be burning fossil fuels, there will be no emissions coming from the exhaust. No pollution you say! Yes that’s right! How nice would it be to go out in the city and take a deep breath of fresh air, much like going into the country and smelling the sweet smell of flowers? Do that now and you’ll likely choke and gag from the smoke and smog inundating your air space. Think of the world of the future…if everyone had an electric car…no pollution to speak of…quiet commutes on the roads and no smog!
OK, so that’s probably not going to happen, but by adding a good percentage of these vehicles to the roads and putting to rest some of the toxic emitting gas guzzlers, we can improve the air quality by leaps and bounds. Just think, you don’t have to dig electricity up, refine it , or anything. Oil will eventually run out, but with solar power, wind power, and nuclear power, we can generate electricity in our own country and we won’t need to depend on others. Excuse me now; I’m going to check into one of these cars myself. After all, if you can’t join them, beat them!
